Notable Quotable

This project serve as an introduction to original image-making. Students are asked to create a hypothetical poster series The Smithsonian Institute, exhibiting a series of retrospectives on remarkable historical figures called “Notable Quotables.” Each poster includes a historic figure, key imagery that defines them, and a notable quote. Key considerations are illustration technique used across a series, composition, and use of typography with illustration. The Smithsonian logo and poster template were provided.

Editorial Illustrations

Students created three editorial illustration based off of an episode of the podcast, “This American Life.” The project began by visually journaling an episode to identify key passages, phrases, and visuals. Students then used these ideas to create a main banner illustration and two spots. The illustrations are showcased in a redesigned web page.

Story Book

Students selected a Grimm’s Fairy Tale to illustrate. By thumbnailing the entire story in a ‘stream of consciousness’ fashion they got a feel for the elementary movement of the story, identified key moments; characters, the setting, the plot, the point/s of conflict and resolution. In consultation with peers and instructor, they selected a section of the story to capture in three spreads. Through the use of page size, shape and arrangement, rhythm, movement, repetition, time and the introduction of cinematic storytelling devices such as jump cuts, establishing shots, birds-eye-view, worm’s eye view, etc., students explored the elements required for successful visual storytelling and image sequencing.
