Illo S23 Storybook
Ann Ho
This book is an illustrated version of a popular Grimm's Fairy Tale titled ""The Singing Bone"", which tells the story of two brothers, at the behest of the king, who set out to find & kill a wild boar that has wreaked havoc on the kingdom. The younger of the two brothers finds and kills the boar in the forest with the help of a magical spear, and the older brother, filled with jealousy & malicious intent, kills his younger brother in order to claim credit for the wild boar. Upon his death, the younger brother's bones are buried under a bridge, and when found by a passing shepherd, his bones begin to sing the tale his death by his own brother's hand.
This illustrated re-telling of the story includes three illustrated spreads of key moments in the story, a spot illustration of the two brothers, and supplementary text set in a type treatment resembling sheet music as it tells, or sings, this classic fairy tale story.

For this project we were tasked with choosing one of the grimm fairy tales and doing our own illustrations for a children's book.

The goal of this project was to simply create illustrations to accompany a Grimm fairy tale of our picking. I chose The Duration of Life, and the contents of the story influenced my illustration style and choices I made regarding typography and color.

The purpose of this project was for me to create my own original illustrations for a story from the Grimm's Fairy Tale collection and use my illustrations to make a storybook out of it. The story I chose is called, "The Fox and The Geese", and the style I went for was a sketchy, messy type of art style for this book.

In our final Illustration project, we had fun creating a story book based on one of the Grimms Brother Fairytale stories of our choice. After reading some stories, I decided to choose The Old Woman in the Wood with a focus on a watercolor, hand-made illustration style. I chose this style because it fit the kids book style I was familiar with as a child and would compliment the dark story of a girl stranded in the woods. A white dove comes with a golden key, which I emphasize with the pop of orange throughout the book. The dark purple was intentional to make the reader feel lonely and lost in the woods along with the girl, as they travel on this journey with her.

The purpose of this project was to illustrate a Grimm's fairy tale, so I illustrated The Smith and The Devil, which is about the blacksmith outsmarting the devil. My inspiration for illustration style was cartoon like styles with solid colors and outlines, as well as exaggerated features like large heads.
