Data Portrait

The data that surrounds us and is now readily available depicts the world we live in a particular light based on the information it reveals. In our current world of information transparency we are more and more defined by the data trails we leave on social networks and our consumer patterns. Data can be naturally beautiful in its purist state, but it also tells a very particular story based on how we look at it. In this project students reveal a narrative about themselves through data in the form of a diagram.

New Cartographies

In the networked world we live in today we are faced with complex new pathways to navigate in our daily lives. From the multi-faceted connections in the world wide web, the mapping of human genome, even the way we communicate with each other now has a multitude of pathways involving different modes of communication. Visualizing these complex territories can allow us to find patterns and see complexities that we may otherwise not have access to. For this project, students chose a topic and create a map. The chosen topic should tell a story—either of social, cultural, political significance or with a particular angle that shows us something we may not otherwise notice.
