With the rise in discussion and concern of Roe vs. Wade being overturned, it is important to think about how that affects our everyday lives, even something as simple as a period tracker. Our healthcare and apps about our personal health and wellbeing are not as private as they seem and can in some cases be used against us to build up a case. It is important to take control of our own health and privacy and this crocheted period tracker is one way to protect your privacy and also create something with your own handiwork that is more personal to you. This blanket can also comfort you during those rough cycles! This blanket uses a system to describe the flow, cramp intensity, symptoms, and emotions of a period cycle. One full square showcases one day to view any patterns in the physical effects of a period that go unseen.

This project prompt was to choose a topic in which data can be mapped out visually for the purpose of revealing patterns and comparisons. Through the study of cartography and visual mapping, this dataset reflects 10 popular bubble tea stores from across Philadelphia, and compares them side by side using a clustered/bubble chart format in order to reveal said patterns, similarities, and correlations. At all ten stores that I visited, I ordered the same drink, a medium mango smoothie with tapioca pearls/bubbles, full ice, 100% sugar. The four specific data points that I measured each store on were price, texture of the tapioca pearls, flavor & sweetness of the mango drink, and overall rating, each of which are respectively color coded using rainbow tapioca bubbles. Each bubble cluster shows the four data points as it pertains to that store, and further utilizes size and color to map the data.

We were tasked with choosing a topic that shows something that people may not notice otherwise. With this topic we created a map showing a story. I chose to map the influence science fiction has on our everyday technology. My map connects the science fiction influences with the technological innovations for six screen-based devices starting in 1901.

I looked into shark migration along the eastern seaboard as sharks are coming closer to New Jersey. They are moving closer recently so I documented there movements and created an interactive map that could be seen at an aquarium or near the beach. Each panel represents a different shark species and when they traveled past New Jersey. Each panel can be taken out of the box so the viewer can look deeper into comparing two or more different sharks and their travels along New Jersey.

Similar to our first data portraits, we were tasked with visualizing a complex set of data through various methods. Instead of personalized data, we were tasked with producing a cartography. This cartography could have been a map of a physical place, or a map of a concept. I chose to track the wheelchair accessibility of some of the most critical buildings for students on our campus. Inspired by Italian designer Massimo Vignelli’s idea of easily and efficiently moving people, I used simple and universal iconography along with minimal color and typography.

Take a look at the most traveled paths at the Walt Disney World parks in Orlando, Florida. Follow the characters’ journeys and see which path you would like to travel during your next visit to the happiest place on Earth. I created a survey questionnaire, sent to strangers who have been to Walt Disney World at least once, and had them fill out their most frequent paths in each park. This could be a great experiment to continue to gather information and see all the unique ways one can travel around the park. There is so much to see and for a less frequented traveler, having the knowledge of annual Passholders could be beneficial to their trip.

This project, simply put, involved tracking and mapping out data as a cartography. My cartography involved tracking rain sounds for one minute and thirty seconds, as well as noises in the surrounding environment (such as a car or plane passing by, or birds chirping). I wanted to visualize this data through the audio’s sound waves, and I represented the additional surrounding sounds through color breaks in the sound waves. My cartography includes timestamps and a QR code link to the audio files. Lastly, I visually watered down my infographic’s title to resemble the nature of rain.

For my cartography, I created a string map of art in the Barnes Foundation created by women featuring women. The purpose of the infographic is to create a conversation about the lack of women artists in the Barnes Foundation. The blue string represents the male artists, the coral string represents the female artists and the yellow represents unidentified artists. The Title, "Women at the Barnes", is ironic due to the fact that the entire string chart is blue.

For the cartography project, I had to create a visual or mapping of a chosen topic to tell a story. I decided to look at data from the Philadelphia Phillies record by date, including the outcome and score, to find out if they play particularly well or poor on certain dates. Looking from 2003 to 2022, I found some interesting results such as the Phillies often lose on September 25th or have won a lot on July 17th

This is a cartography mapping of music, more specifically it allows people to follow the song used, in a visual manner as they listen to the audio. It is in a sense an audio visualization of the song This is Gospel by Panic at the Disco. The hope is that these patterns can be used among other songs in the future and are easily interchangeable. There is also potential for this type of cartography to be turned into a video with the sound over it to become a moving audio visualizer.
