Illustration F20
Illustration Elective
Story Cards
Students created a series of Story Cards based on mythology (or a theme of their choice). This project introduces students to style and technique, illustrating across a series, considering relationships between typography and illustration, character studies, and visual storytelling.
Editorial Illustrations
Students created three editorial illustration based off of an episode of the podcast, “This American Life.” The project began by visually journaling an episode to identify key passages, phrases, and visuals. Students then used these ideas to create a main banner illustration and two spots. The illustrations are showcased in a redesigned web page.
Story Book
Students selected a Grimm’s Fairy Tale to illustrate. By thumbnailing the entire story in a ‘stream of consciousness’ fashion they got a feel for the elementary movement of the story, identified key moments; characters, the setting, the plot, the point/s of conflict and resolution. In consultation with peers and instructor, they selected a section of the story to capture in three spreads. Through the use of page size, shape and arrangement, rhythm, movement, repetition, time and the introduction of cinematic storytelling devices such as jump cuts, establishing shots, birds-eye-view, worm’s eye view, etc., students explored the elements required for successful visual storytelling and image sequencing.
