D3 F22 Trope

For the trope project, I decided to design tea packaging. Clarendon was created in London, England in 1845. It was created during the victorian era when tea time was very popular in England. I used a victorian color palette for my tea packaging design and incorporating Clarendon's history into the cheesy, fun copy-write.

For this project, we were asked to design a trope for a specific font. I was assigned the font, Bodoni, and the trope I decided to design were perfume bottles and packaging. I chose perfume because I found that Bodoni is used by some perfume brands such as Valentino and Calvin Klein. I designed three different fragrances, and each one is a different weight. I included history of the font as well as the designer on the back of the packaging. As well as this, I added a description of the scent and the "ingredients" included.

This project asked me to display a typeface through an item and its typographic trope. My typeface was Jenson, a Humnist typeface created in 1470. I did my project about late 1800s to early 1900’s “cureall” medicine bottles and their packaging. These bottles often displayed bold claims about the quality of the product, saying it can cure anything or save you from all of your pains. I used the style of these bold claims to discuss Jenson’s formal properties.

As further exploration of the Didot typeface, we investigated typographic tropes and how we could use our typeface in these tropes. I chose to focus on the trope of a Playbill and created a fictional musical about Firmin Didot, the designer of the Didot typeface. I researched Didot and those involved in his life and design process to act as the musical’s “cast” and created a list of song titles to tell the story as well. To create the logo type for the musical, I used a provisional press with laser cut letters.

The trope project is an extension of the font mannerism where I was assigned the typeface Futura. The trope I chose is t-shirt tags because they need to be clear and easy to read at small scales. The logo was created using b, p, q, and d. These four letters together formed a butterfly which is where I got the name Futura Fly. The inside t-shirt tags include the logo, size, font, designer, and the classification of Futura. Under that is the family display. The back of the t-shirts include the anatomy of the fonts and the hanging tag includes the logo, futura history, and a design made from the letters o and p.

I was assigned the font Helvetica which originates from Switzerland. I associate Swiss army knives with Switzerland therefore I made my trope a catalogue of a Swiss army knife using letters as the utility tools.

A decorative Christmas card seems like a fitting trope to display Mrs Eaves, a modern-day transitional typeface. The Christmas card includes a poem detailing the scandalous history of the creation of the typeface Baskerville and Mrs Eaves. Mrs Eaves is a variant of Baskerville which is accredited to John Baskerville. However, it’s thought that Sarah Eaves, Baskerville’s romantic partner, did most of the designing for the famous typeface. A handmade envelope comes with the card. It has a gold foiling pattern on the interior made from a Mrs Eaves glyph. Alongside the envelope are custom Mrs Eaves Stamps. They display different weights and ligatures of the typeface.

This magazine is for the trope specimen project that derived from the font I was given, Archer. Because of it's creation for Martha Stewart, I connected it to different types of magazines, landing on a tabloid style including a story about Hoefler and Frere-Jones splitting as business partners, a type poster, font recipe, and other pages to further the magazine feel.

For my trope project I used my font Futura to create a horoscope booklet. Since Futura was used in the sign left on the moon during the moon landing, I decided to go along with the astrological theme. Acting as if Futura was a new zodiac sign, I discussed all of the properties and characteristics of the font in this format. I used categories such as romantic compatibility to discuss font pairings and added more comparisons like this. I went with a fun colorful theme but also included constellation imagery and a dark purple color to keep with the celestial theme.

Explore a typographic trope that relates to the previously assigned typeface and create a mockup or prototype example of that trope with the typeface.

For my trope project, I was assigned the font Interstate. Interstate was used on the green sign of the Sesame Street logo, which is why I decided to design posters for kids, that could be hung up in a classroom to teach students the alphabet, along with the anatomy of the letters, as well as using similar green signs as labels. For each letter, I used an animal and anatomy part that began with the same letter.

For this project we were tasked with finding and creating a typography trope. I decided to redesign the front cover of a Magic Tree House book using Baskerville as my type.
