Project: Capstone
In their final semester, seniors develop a research-based, self-authored capstone project. We ask them to identify an opportunity or problem where design can play an important role. As graphic designers, there’s no boundaries on how our creativity can improve, support, educate, or facilitate an experience. Often the capstone comes from a personal experience or interest and the results of the student’s efforts are large-scale, multi-component design experiences that address a variety of diverse and complex problems.

My Story
Oftentimes living in the United States, the majority of Americans and other ethnic groups are not familiar with my ethnic background and culture due to the unpopularity of the Karen people. Which led me to why I want to share my personal story of coming to America to better inform non-immigrants about the diverse ethnic backgrounds living in America, and I want it to serve as an inspiration for other immigrants to share their stories and be a resource for those thinking about immigrating themselves.

Therapaw
How might we... create companionship for older adults in need of mental health support with older dogs that are often overlooked in shelters?
TheraPaw is an online platform and mailing system to help adults experiencing any form of mental health issues and connect them with adult dogs in shelters. Our digital features include a website with the questionnaire, “paw-files” of the dogs, and opportunities to watch the dogs live on camera. This organization aims to promote the health benefits of animal interactions by matching a person to a dog in a local shelter.

Community Cats
Problem: In America alone, there is an estimate of 70 MILLION stray and feral cats. There are efforts to help this population of cats, such as TNR and adoption, but these resources cannot uphold the rising numbers of cats.
Solution: Community Cats is a platform that helps stray and feral cats by activating communities. We value and recognize the volunteers who are already attending to these cats. We aim to bring these people and their efforts to a focused, online, location. By doing so, we hope that more community cats will be assisted.

Free Will
Given the amount of freedom we had to come up with our own capstone project and make it more personal to us was something I was really excited about. I love drawing and doing character illustrations and so I thought it was a perfect opportunity to challenge myself to make my own characters, my own story, and piece it all together into something special. Free Will is a story about two young people living in a hopeless land that are about to take an incredible risk for a reward beyond their comprehension.
