D2 S22 Icons
Annika Zitto
For this project we were tasked with creating an icon system inspired by our given item. For my item, the Colander, I explored many routes, but eventually decided to focus on still life painting after seeing a colander in works by Clara Peeters. I created icons for a cat, fish in a colander, and an oyster, all of which have symbolic meaning in still life paintings. The genre is known for frequently using symbolism, so my icons are used to highlight the meaning of each symbol. I pictured them being used in a museum setting where they would be placed on placards to remind people of their significance.

For this project, we were tasked with creating an icon set from research on an initial object. After being assigned measuring cups, I discovered that they were first introduced in a cookbook by a woman named Fanny Farmer during the 19th century. Because of this origin, I decided to create icons for the different steps of a recipe: ingredients, cooking, and serving. I drew inspiration from the illustration style of the Victorian Era when creating my icons to further reference the origin of measuring cups. This icon set is intended to be used in “The Modern Victorian Cookbook,” a guide to cooking historical recipes with modern tools.

The icon project was based on the items we were assigned at the beginning of the semester. I was assigned hair rollers. Before we began designing the icons we had to research our objects and complete a research map that explored the objects used by people, the physical setting it is used in, its culture, and technology. I decided to do further research with the culture category and the public wearing of hair rollers in Seoul. After researching other Seoul beauty trends I decided to base my icons off of those trends. The first beauty trend was dewy lips, the second hair rollers and the third rosey cheeks. My icons are meant to be used in a beauty company on packaging to identify what the customer ordered.

This project was to use an object to create a set of icons that related to our object. I was assigned plastic hair rollers. It was very popular for women of the 1960s to use hair rollers for everyday styles. Women often owned styling guides or magazines with instructions on how to achieve specific styles using the rollers. My set of icons would be a part of those instructions to help represent different steps in using the rollers. They represent rolling your hair in the curlers, gently brushing out the curl, and applying hair spray.

Within this assignment students were assigned an object to use throughout the semester. My object used was a ping pong ball. To generate ideas where a ping pong ball might be utilized within an icon system I created an object research map, based upon the setting ping pong balls are used in and my general knowledge on them. I decided to create icons based upon an app that would show users stats, video, and games all around the game of ping pong. Illustrated in my icons you will see one for statistics, one for watching ping pong videos, and one for the app home screen itself.
