D2 S22 Poster

For this project, we were asked to create a poster calling attention to an important social/environmental issue. We worked in groups to ideate on topics, eventually separating to decide what our individual topics would be. My interest in semiotics lead me to my poster, which prominently states “I Banged Her,” with a definition of bang seen in smaller print. The purpose of this poster was to bring awareness to the linguistic significance of how women are discussed in sexual contexts. This poster was created through screen printing, so I was able make many unique iterations of my poster. The screen printing process allowed my to depict my message through rough handling of ink, at times quite literally banging it onto my paper.

For this project, we were tasked with creating a social action poster on an issue we find important, and I choose to focus on the recent wave of book bans and burnings in the United States. Because burning has often been used as a way to silence unheard stories, I decided to contrast the book burning with the burnings during the Salem Witch Trial. This also serves to represent how book burning is being used to erase aspects of history that those who get to write history would rather forget.

To prepare for this project we were split into three groups with the broad topic that we felt more drawn to. I went with the social group and together we created a mind map with different ideas that we felt fit into the category. The social issue I decided to create my poster for was mass incarceration. There's around two million people in jail today in the United States alone. I believe this is a major problem that should be taken seriously. The purpose of my poster was to represent how long this problem has been occurring (with the jagged jail bars) and to draw attention to the topic so people cannot turn a blind eye.

We were tasked with creating a screen-printed poster that brings awareness to a current social, political, or environmental issue. The goal of my poster is to create awareness to deforestation and the reality of the materials we use. Even though there are many places where new trees are planted for the ones cut down, forests are being logged too quickly for this to make up for local species lost habitat and the climate. It’s common knowledge that paper comes from trees, but this poster’s goal is to make viewers actively conscious of this and thoughtful when using materials.

When creating this poster, we got the opportunity to pick a topic that resonated with a political, environmental, or social issue. I chose to pick the serious topic of animal testing. I purposely communicated through typography and color how serious and saddening this topic is. By integrating a syringe with the letter T in “stop” I was able to illustrate imagery and combine it into text. The message I created through this poster resonates with viewers and illustrates the urgency to take a stand against animal testing.
