D2 S22 Zine
Annika Zitto
This project asked us to create a 12 page zine inspired by our item mind maps. It was highly recommended not to add type to these zines, so our focus was on imagery. My zine started from my exploration of the physical properties of the colander. I considered the colander as a lens, holding it in front of my camera to photograph the sky. From here, I continued to break down the picture of the sky through different means. My process included tactile work such as weaving, cutting, and hand-placing paper. My end result included this tactility in the covers, which have the holes of the colander cut out of them.

For our final project, we returned to our initial research about an object. When developing connections to measuring cups, I found a strong sense of nostalgia connected to baking because of family or cultural significance. Because of this, I choose a biscotti recipe that has been important in my family as the topic of my zine. I used scans of the recipe as background texture for food photography that was used to create a visual recipe detailing the steps taken to make the biscotti.

For our final project we went back to the objects we were assigned in the beginning of the semester. My object was hair rollers, I had to revisit my research map and previous notes from critiques. For this project I did further research on a comment that was made during a critique, to make a book about hair curlers. Instead of hair curlers I went down the path of hair types and that all hair types are acceptable and should be taken care of. I researched the twelve most common hair types to include them in my zine and I found different people with different hair types to include in my zine as well. I never noticed before this project how different everyone's hair is. I believe hair is something that is overlooked but is an important expression of someone's personality.

Using our assigned object, we were to create a zine that told a narrative relating to our object. My object was plastic hair rollers. Women commonly used hair rollers in the 1960sā. Women would often wear them in their hair all day to create long lasting styles. My Mom helped me with this project by posing as a 1960ās woman using rollers, going about her day, and the styling her hair for an outing. I gave the photos a vintage look and included other retro elements to create a scrapbook style photo album zine.

We were assigned with an object in the beginning of the semester and tasked with using it throughout various projects. In this project we were asked to create a zine with our object mine being a ping pong ball. I created a story about how ABS plastic or the plastic ping pong balls are made from are often recycled back into Legos which also are made out of ABS plastic. Throughout a short-story I engage my audience targeted at younger individuals on how the end use of a ping pong ball can get created into something new like Legos.
