Senior Showcase

Project: Capstone

In their final semester, seniors develop a research-based, self-authored capstone project. We ask them to identify an opportunity or problem where design can play an important role. As graphic designers, there’s no boundaries on how our creativity can improve, support, educate, or facilitate an experience. Often the capstone comes from a personal experience or interest and the results of the student’s efforts are large-scale, multi-component design experiences that address a variety of diverse and complex problems.

CommunicAsian

CommunicAsian is an interactive exhibition regarding the stigma of mental health in the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Mental health among the Asian American community was chosen due to personal experiences and the increase of discussion with the rise of the Stop Asian Hate movement. This exhibition cultivates a safe space for participants to share, be vulnerable, and communicate with their own thoughts and emotions along with others. Throughout the exhibition there are activities allowing for reflection on a participants identity and mental health journey along with informative installations and banners.

Arcana

Arcana is made to help people learn the nature of tarot and the benefits tarot has for mental health. Part of Arcana’s mission is to help break the stereotypes of tarot cards and provide information. As tarot is highly personal and personalized, it is important for Arcana to be able to adapt to people’s needs and preferences. Much like meditation, the practice of reading tarot can help with mindfulness and bringing attention to yourself in the present moment.

Bellie

Bellie recognizes a critical opportunity to confront the historical and pervasive issue of obstetric violence and medical neglect endured by Black women within US healthcare systems, especially prevalent in maternity care deserts across Pennsylvania. My project seeks to confront the high Black maternal mortality and morbidity rates by ensuring a safe, accessible, and empowering prenatal care experience for Black women. Bellie does this through offering Connection (via a mobile truck clinic connecting Black women to healthcare providers), Community, Education, and Emergency services. By innovating systemic change, Bellie strives to deliver equitable and accessible healthcare outcomes for pregnant Black women in Pennsylvania's deserted maternity care areas, fostering a supportive environment that emphasizes their well-being and human rights.

ASCEND

Many first-generation college students navigate the complex application process without prior experience or guidance. This can lead to missed deadlines, incomplete applications, and, ultimately, limited college options. ASCEND is an educational program targeting first-generation high school students with the purpose of guiding them through the college application process. We provide them with the resources and materials necessary to lead them to success. We also provide the students with a strong support system of mentors, educators, and past first-gen achievers. ASCEND believes in the power of education to transform lives.

Kickstart Sports

Kickstart Sports is a program that introduces children aged 5-7 to a variety of sports, inspiring them to exercise and discover their passion at an early age. Being physically active offers numerous benefits for kids' physical, mental, and social development. At Kickstart Sports, we believe in exposing children to new experiences through engaging physical activities and educational resources, such as our “Let’s Learn” book series. This exposure not only educates, but also inspires children to try new sports. Additionally, Kickstart Sports simplifies the decision-making process for parents by eliminating the pressure of choosing just one sport for their child. We aim to make sports exploration enjoyable, educational, and enriching for all involved by catering to both children's curiosity and parents' needs.

The Grow Zone

OPPORTUNITY: How might we improve the hospital experience for young children?

SOLUTION: The Grow Zone provides kids an escape from their hospital rooms and disruption from their daily lifestyle. It allows for relaxation and gives kids an escape from possible negative effects and experiences that a medical environment can give, giving them back the best versions of themselves.

• The Grow Zone environemtal layout provides a change of scenery to an ecosystem that includes lively characters for little ones to enjoy.

• The Grow Zone kit comes with themed elements based off of the ecosystem the hospital has chosen. The Under the Sea Kit includes: a stuffed deep sea character plush, a story and coloring book, sensory character toys, and a t-shirt.

• The sensory toys and plush are meant to help target toddlers' needs for tactile development.

• The Under the Sea theme allows for a break from the medical environment atmosphere, while introducing little ones to new colors, creatures, and ideas.

Black Girl Universitiy

Although Black girls attend predominantly white institutions, their experience is not commonly acknowledged or given the proper care of resources on campus. Black girls at these institutions not only have academics to worry about but also their wellbeing and economics amongst discrimination and microaggressions. By combining the social aspect of a board game and this hard hitting topic, conversations can be had and insights can be gained. Games have a way of bringing people together and challenging them to think beyond themselves. My solution was to design a vibrant board game that follows the collegiate journey of a Black Girl in reach of her degree on a four year track with copy that shared realistic setbacks and triumphs Black girls experience on a daily basis at predominately white institutions. By having this board game, one can see themselves represented and recognize they are not alone in their experience as well as learning and understanding there is more to be done for Black Girls feeling more comfortable at PWI.

Reroute

Reroute emerged from a need to address the critical issues with Philadelphia’s road infrastructure. With over 120 annual deaths attributed to car accidents and a High-Injury Network accounting for 80% of traffic fatalities despite comprising only 12% of streets, the city faces a dire situation. Reroute saw an opportunity to educate and empower citizens to advocate for change by emphasizing the importance of voting and petitioning. By raising awareness and encouraging civic action, Reroute aims to pave the way for safer streets and a brighter future for all Philadelphians.

Rejuno

Athletes and active individuals often push their bodies to the limit, striving for peak performance. However, this relentless pursuit can lead to increased stress, muscle fatigue, and a heightened risk of injuries. By neglecting proper recovery techniques, they may hinder their progress and compromise their long-term well-being. Furthermore, many individuals overlook the significance of mental health in the recovery process. While physical recuperation is vital, mental well-being plays an equally crucial role. Ignoring mental health can result in burnout, decreased motivation, and diminished performance. This app addresses this gap by providing holistic recovery solutions that encompass both physical and mental aspects. Through these revealing snapshots, delve into the essence of our app and unlock the potential for sustained excellence in your athletic endeavors while prioritizing your mental well-being.

ECCO

Transportation is the largest contributor to climate change, and as we head towards an electric future in mobility there is much skepticism and misinformation surrounding electric vehicles, and their ability to perform compared to internal combustion vehicles. Research shows that many drivers suffer from charge or range anxiety and worry that they will not be able to find an electric vehicle charger, especially on longer adventures like road trips. ECCO seeks to bridge the information barrier between car and consumer, and make going electric while traveling easier.

Vitality Project

Most children will experience puberty between the ages of 10 and 14 and that’s a difficult time period, adding the layer of an autoimmune disease doesn’t make things any better. Autoimmune diseases are often not visible to the eye and can be hard to explain to those who aren't familiar with them. Vitality Project aims to address the challenges faced by these children who often lack a safe place, understanding, and resources to effectively manage their conditions. The program aims to empower young individuals to navigate their health journey with confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging.

FactorIn

Hemophilia is a rare genetic bleeding disorder that causes a deficiency in clotting factors in the blood. It affects mostly males, with roughly 1 in every 5000 males having it. FactorIn is an app that serves as a channel for people with hemophilia to sign up, follow each other, and converse. Users are able to share photos and text posts, customize their profile, and choose to join groups that align with their interests. This allows users to connect over shared interests, besides just having a bleeding disorder. An events page also allows users to find and attend events in their area to meet others in person.

Percolator

In an age where our phones have become an extension of our memories, capturing countless moments and ideas, the methods to recall and actively engage with these digital captures remain fragmented and inefficient. Percolator aims to transform how individuals interact with their digital memories by leveraging AI's powerful qualitative research capabilities. By developing a solution that seamlessly surfaces relevant captures and enables users to make meaningful connections, we can foster an environment of active idea development, reflection, and creative exploration.
