D2 Icons 24
Jocelyn Williams
For the icons project, I was tasked with creating 3 icons based on a given object, which was a comb in my case. To generate ideas, I created an object map to explore all the potential uses and places associated with a comb. Considering its role in hair, I brainstormed ideas of where a comb would be in a hair salon or be used for various hairstyles. Eventually, I decided to design icons that depict a comb combing hair, a curler curling hair, and a hairspray bottle. Each one of these icons represent a different aspect of hair styling.

For our first project, we were assigned a random object. From there, we created an object research map, exploring people, settings, and culture. My object was rubber bands, and from that, I was able to expand into florists as people who would use rubber bands daily. For my icon system, I designed and created three icons to represent the different categories one might find in a flower delivery app: everyday, romantic, and formal occasions.

From the beginning of the course, we were given one object to incorporate into our projects, mine was a mesh strainer. Our prompt was to create a Zine and I decided to illustrate the labor and processing that goes into producing Oolong tea. I played with the juxtaposition of production by contrasting machine and human labor. The story begins with the hands of field workers picking the leaves that will later be ground into whole-leaf tea. The last three pages transition to the complete removal of the production process and ends with a person blissfully enjoying their tea.

For this project, students were asked to create an icon system based on a randomly assigned object. I received plastic bendy straws as my object. After doing my research on said straws, I moved towards the restaurant industry for my icons. My idea for the system comes from the diner that I work at at home, as it has been around my area for a long time, and has that old school charm. I created my icons of a milkshake, a burger, and a ice cream sundae using continuity concepts to be used as a labeling system for an old school style menu.

For the first project, I was given a random item and with the task of creating an icon system. My object was a hair roller. I chose to explore the settings people use them in and that led me to a hair salon. My icon system's function is meant to be organizational to help the stylists maintain their stations with all the tools they use. My icons are representative of a normal brush, a round brush, and a hair clip.

We had to work with the item we were given at the beginning of the year for inspiration. My item was measuring cups.

The basis of this project was to make three icons that were related to an object that was handed to me, which were nails. I also had to use Gestalt principles, so I chose to incorporate closure and proximity. I made my icons to exist in the setting of an abandoned construction site. My icons are as follows: a foot above a nail, a skull, and hand reaching out of a hole. Since the setting is dangerous, I made the icons simple to understand and made the signs bright yellow to stand out at night. The yellow color simulates a reflective sign for people that have problems with their eyesight.

For our first project of the semester, each of us were given an item out of a brown paper bag and were tasked to design our own icon system related to our given item. The item i was given were measuring spoons. When I think of measuring spoons, I immediately think of it as a cooking utensil, so that was my main focus. My icons consisted of a timer, measuring spoons, and a measuring cup. I pictured this icon set being used in a cook book, instructing on measurements for recipes.

The objective of this project was to use an item we were given at random and research how it works and its history. We used this research to design three symbols that represent key aspects of graphic design. We then had to use the symbols in a mock-up to show how they would appear in real life.

In this project, we were given an object where we proceeded to learn about its properties and create a object map of our object. Then, we were to chose a route of where we wanted to go with our icons. I chose to go on a non traditional setting as one would think with spoons. I created an icon system that showed material types of utensils and placed them in a restaurant store where one could buy which ever type they wanted.
