D2 Posters 24

For the poster project, I had to create a poster that addresses a social issue. I chose to focus on redlining and school district boundaries. School district boundaries have been unfairly drawn due to redlining. Thus, I strived to communicate the message that school boundaries need to be changed. To visually convey this, I depicted 2 contrasting sides: one illustrating a well-maintained school and the other illustrating dilapidated and overcrowded school. Then, centered between the 2 sides, in all caps are the words "redraw the school district boundaries". Furthermore, I strived to communicate my message through using color. The more affluent side is white to illustrate that they are more seen and represented, and the less affluent side is a darker blue to represent that they are unseen, forgotten, and underrepresented.

The prompt for this project was to create a social action poster which we would then screen print. I decided to portray a pawn which I created using Adobe Illustrator. The symbolism of the pawn stands for the Israeli and Palestinian people along with Arabs and Jews being dehumanized in the process of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. I use the phrase “Pawns of War” in both Hebrew and Arabic as well as “No Winners” to convey the result of selective empathy during war. My purpose was to urge those who are personally affected to participate in discourse and not let that discourse fall solely into the hands of the government and the Western world.

For this project, I had to create a poster that would address a social, political, or environmental issue that I consider important. I chose an environmental problem which is air pollution. I wanted my poster to be straight forward so I relied on the physical attributes instead of text. I used the neon colors so that it could have a toxic look to it which also gives the impression that the air we breathe in is toxic.

The poster/screen printing project needed to display a struggle held by modern society.

For this project, I had to design a poster that addressed a specific social, political, or cultural issue. I chose to do something about Lebanon because it is something personally significant. Watching the suffering in your home country is a heart wrenching feeling, and that was what I wanted to portray with my design. The Lebanese cedar is representative of Lebanon and the Arabic word "albi" means my heart. The veins of the heart also serve a dual purpose as the roots of the cedar.

The objective of this project was to design a poster in Illustrator based on a current event or issue. We then had to format these files so that they were able to be screen-printed. After that, we were able to screen-print our designs into real posters.

My social action poster is about spreading awareness for body image. Currently, ideas of the “perfect body” are consuming social media and leading to numerous mental health disorders among younger generations. I designed this poster to connect with people that also feel controlled and outcast by our society’s current body image stereotypes. Additionally, I wanted to connect my topic to the fashion industry to display its connection to issues around body dysmorphia. Therefore, I made a model walking down a runway of contradicting advice on whether she should eat more food or eat less. I chose all uppercase letters and made my background a bright to make the message bold. When I screen-printed, I kept the same idea by using neon pink and green.

For the second project of the semester, our class was tasked to create an action poster discussing social problems going on in the world. I decided to dive into the alarming issue of plastic pollution and its profound impact on wildlife. We could only use two colors for this project, and I immediately knew that mine were going to be gray and orange. Not only does the orange grab one's attention, but the gray on the bird can emphasize the pain the bird is enduring because of the plastic wrapped around its neck, slowly killing it. I wanted this poster to trigger a sense of sadness and sympathy for the bird, urging people to treat wildlife with more respect by saying no to plastic.

For this project, students were tasked to create a screen printed social action poster on a topic of our choice. Ever since I was a child, I have played soccer. As it is such a large portion of my life, I chose to explore the "Equal Pay for Play" act that has been enacted by members of the United States Women's National Soccer team (USWNT) on the basis of the pay difference between the men's and women's national teams. The topic of equality as a whole especially when it comes to gender equality is one that I have been very passionate about. I chose a very simple design of a cleat as to not take away from the impact of the typography, and used black and neon green as my two colors to give contrast from the white background. I also implemented the slogan and iconography of Nike, to tie in sports as well. The goal is to make a series of these posters with different sports' footwear and/or colors promoting the same message.

For the second project, we were asked to create a social action poster. Our posters had to use only two colors and be screen printed. I decided to base my poster on overconsumption and excessiveness, as I believe it's an important topic in today's society where we're constantly bombarded with ads, and many people find comfort in purchasing. For my poster, I chose a hypnotic design to represent the cycle of overconsumption, illustrating the constant desire for more.

In this project we were tasked to pick a political/social/cultural that we consider important. I chose to highlight the issues involving immigrant detention camp, more specifically the children detention camps, where children are separated from their families the second they cross the border and get detained. In my design I highlighted this issue specific to the USA-Mexico border, with the use of color and the American flag being used as a jail bars.

For our second project of the semester, we had to make a social action poster to address issues (known or unknown) that were important to us. After a couple of mind mapping, I chose to do vehicle pollution where millions of vehicles are releasing lots of smog and the solution to reduce is by riding a bicycle. Overall the design led me to make an icon of a car, an arrow, and a bicycle to show an easier way to represent my signage on the streets or billboards. The color choices were the most challenging part as we were limited to two colors. At first, it was green and yellow but I decided to change it to yellow and white on the black background.
