Sophomore Review F23

Based on the way you prioritized the features of your service/app, I am asking you to select an aspect that best captures your service. For a lot of people this has been an on-boarding process. Other’s a more specific aspect of their app. You’re might begin with a search and then end with watching a show/movie. This sequence might show how your app eliminates the pain point you identified in your interview.

SOPHOMORE SHOWCASE

Project: Font Mannerism Portfolio

In this project, students will craft a typographic specimen highlighting the characteristics of an assigned typeface family. They'll examine the formal elements that unite and distinguish the various styles within the family. Students will master typographic terminology, establish grid structures, and investigate how typography communicates tone and emotion. Utilizing InDesign and Illustrator, they'll design around twelve pages showcasing their typographic exploration.

Project: Typographic Trope

For this project, students will examine typographic tropes. Drawing from their previous exploration of typeface families, they will conduct comprehensive research into their assigned typeface. Students will create a "Type Specimen" that showcases their application of the trope's typographic treatments across an entire typeface family. With this, they will practice controlling hierarchy using the various weights and styles within the typeface family.

Project: Symposium Poster

In this project, students are tasked with conveying the excitement of a symposium topic to its intended audience. The information itself must constitute the “imagery” of the poster. A viewer should be able to understand what the symposium content will be about, the calendar of events, and quickly learn who the main speakers are. The Symposium Poster challenges students to deal with multiple content levels on a single page. Considerations of composition, hierarchy, and how type connotes meaning through formal properties is given.

Project: LP Package & Animation

In this project, students redesign an album of their choice as an LP reissue utilizing typography or lettering as the primary vehicle for concept. The design should capture the emotional and intellectual spirit of the music, taking into account its formal and conceptual qualities. Consideration of formal elements—harmony, melody, rhythm, tone, and form; as well as cultural connections—genre, audience, and historical influences come into play. The addition of a lyric animation introduces a time-based hierarchy with type in motion.
